My
Sunshine; A Self-Portrait by Laurene Puls, CPSA |
Artist's Biography
In 1993, Laurene Puls began taking colored pencil drawing classes in North Canton with Amy Lindenberger, a well-known portrait artist. Her success with the program resulted in her embracing a full-time commitment to life as an artist. 1996 was a year of firsts: she began commission work, she was accepted into the International CPSA Exhibition, and she had a piece of her work published. She has received numerous local, regional, and national awards for colored pencil artwork. Within the national organization, the Colored Pencil Society of America (CPSA), she has been awarded the honor of Signature Status and a Five-Year Merit Award.
In addition to a life membership in CPSA, she belonged to the Canton District Chapter of CPSA serving as corresponding secretary, news editor, webmaster, and president prior to its dissolution. She also served as historian and exhibited regularly with the Alliance Art Center. Currently she is an active member of the Detroit District Chapter of CPSA.
Her work has been accepted by jurors into shows in California, Washington, Michigan, Texas, Tennessee, New Mexico, Illinois, Massachusetts, Vermont, Georgia and Florida. It has appeared in local newspapers, American Artist online, and was published in Best of Colored Pencil IV.
In addition to drawing, she also has designed and maintains four websites that promote colored pencil art and artists. She lays-out and prints greeting cards for herself and other colored pencil artists, a detailed Civil War Fine Art catalogue, and other promotional materials for fellow colored pencil artists.
Laurene was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. In 1970, she graduated from Edinboro State College in Pennsylvania with a B.S. in Social Studies and was married. In 1973, she and her husband moved to Ohio where they have raised three children. She now lives with her husband, Gordon, and adult daughter, Emily, near North Canton.
Artist Statement
Laurene’s strengths as an artist include attention to detail, a crisp smooth pencil application style, and an unconventional view of the world.
